A grit removal system is a preliminary wastewater treatment unit designed to remove heavy inorganic particles such as sand, silt, and gravel from incoming effluent. It operates on the principle of controlled sedimentation, where flow velocity is maintained to allow grit to settle while keeping organic matter in suspension.
The system typically consists of a grit chamber, collection mechanism, and grit classifier for washing and dewatering. It protects downstream equipment from abrasion, reduces maintenance, and enhances overall treatment efficiency.
